Living Classroom
An affiliate program of GreenTown Los Altos, The Living Classroom is a privately funded program which began in September, 2008 by offering volunteer docent-led lessons to K-3 teachers at Loyola, Oak, Santa Rita, Springer, and Gardner Bullis Schools. The program has realized immediate success as docents provided 171 lessons to nearly 1,000 students during its first year. Future plans include offering lessons at Almond and Covington Schools and expanding to grades 4-6.
The Living Classroom utilizes school gardens and outdoor areas as it provides children with hands-on learning experiences by teaching them engaging, garden-based lessons. These lessons complement the existing curriculum and provide the opportunity for students to experience concepts taught in the classroom through exploration of the natural world.
