Clean Air
PROGRAM
GOALS
-
Contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our homes, other buildings and the equipment we use to maintain our properties by transitioning from gas-based to all-electric solutions
-
Educate the citizens of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills and the trades people they hire about the environmental, health and safety harzards resulting from the use of gas; and be an intermediate resource for people seeking more information
-
Encourage yard waste collection through means that don’t pollute and release particulate matter - Rake and broom are best, but electric leaf blowers are far preferred over gas leaf blowers
-
Advocate to builders and developers to adopt all-electric construction
-
Develop education programs and incentives with the towns of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills to accelerate the transition of our building stock from gas to all-electric
FACTS
-
Over 43% of Los Altos’ contribution to GHG comes from our buildings. In 2013, it was estimated that over 59,950 metric tons of CO2e emissions comes from our homes in one year. (Source: 7/23/13 City of Los Altos Climate Action Plan)
-
Effective 2020, The California Energy Codes requires that all new construction includes solar panels
-
Fossil fuel powered yard equipment is both an environmental issue and a public health issue. The amount of polluting emissions from gas leaf blowers is significant
